If you’ve been following me in Instagram (which you should, because I’m pretty exciting–@crunchymamascience), you’ll know that I am currently on an anniversary vacation with my hubby! We are gallivanting around Denver and then we are off to Salt Lake City; we’re without our baby though, and I’m super sad about that. I know she is in good hands with nana and papa!
I don’t know about you, but travelling can really throw me off. It seems whenever I go on vacation, I end up feeling like I have completely fallen off the wagon with my health. I have such a great system at home, but that all gets messed up when I’m out of my element. These are some of the crunchy ways I try to stay balanced when I’m not home. I’ve included nine essential items to bring in your natural travel kit, and how to stay healthy, energized, and relaxed when on vacation!

Coconut oil, the ol’ reliable. The lotion at the hotel will probably be full of fragrance and harsh chemicals, and will exacerbate tired, dry skin. A little (travel size) jar of coconut oil will fill any needs for moisturizing, toothpaste, lotion, injuries, and everything ever. Just be sure to put it in a tightly sealed bag!
Vacation is a great time to try new foods and indulge a little! However, eating differently than you normally do can wreak havoc on your digestion, which is why it’s great to have some digestive enzymes to keep your tummy happy after meals.

Glass Water Bottle
It’s important to stay hydrated when travelling, and you don’t want to get stuck buying a bunch of plastic water bottles. Keep your glass water bottle (get the one I use HERE) with you, but be sure it’s empty when you go through airport security! Being hydrated ensures your skin stays healthy and your body has the tools to deal with all the excess salt consumed when going out to eat.
You can be absolute sure you will end up in a situation where you will be starving and the only option is some junk food from a gas station or airport. Vacation is definitely a time to allow some cheat meals, but don’t waste that on icky gas station food. Stock up on healthy snacks before you go and avoid excess sugar, salt, and preservatives. DIY Dry Shampoo
Okay for real–who has time to shower on vacation? Well, at least wash your hair? Sprinkle a little DIY dry shampoo in those roots and voila! Good for another day or so. How do you make it? Cacao Powder (brunettes only) + Arrowroot Starch in a Spice Shaker adjusted to your hair color. Sprinkle and rub. Done.
Essential Oil Rollers

I keep these with me for certain problems that often come up when travelling! Get some roller bottles HERE.
Circulation: Sitting in cars and on airplanes is hard on the circulation! To help with the post travel swelling, bring a massage oil to rub on your legs in order to get the blood flowing.
- Cypress + Rosemary
Tension: Travelling and hotel pillows sometimes can leave you with a sore neck; and then, there’s the airplane ride. You might need this to release a little tension!
- Peppermint + Rosemary + Lavender + Roman Chamomile
Tummy: In the event you do get a little tummy ache or perhaps eat one too many spicy chicken wings, this is great to have around to help with digestive support.
- Spearmint + Ginger + Sweet Orange

Do not skimp on quality with essential oils. They are not created equally; please educate yourself. Do your research on the company you have chosen; call them and ask questions, research their farms, distillation processes, GC/MS reports, organic practices, and other data. Essential oils are powerful and must be treated as such. Learn enough about them to use them safely. Please, keep them in a locked cabinet far away from children. Room Purifying Spray
You never know what kind of stank you will run into in hotel rooms, bathrooms, and rental cars. Bring this with you so you can purify the air in whatever space you’re in–just make sure it’s less than 3.4 oz per TSA regulations if you’re flying with it. (Get Them HERE). I like to use lemon, lavender, pine, and tea tree.
Essential Oil Inhalers
You need these because they fit easily in a bag and don’t bother anyone with the scent so they are perfect for the airplane, public transportation, or car. (Get Them HERE).
Peace: In order to survive the airport and city traffic, I need a little peace. Also, on this trip I don’t have my baby with me, and I’m a sad mama. So this will bring me a little emotional support!
- Frankincense + Bergamot
Sleepytime: Vacation can sometimes leave me wired and having a hard time falling asleep. The new bed, room, and pillows don’t help either. This little gem helps me wind down and calm my mind.
- Lavender + Vetiver
- Cedarwood (Atlas) + Tangerine
Defense: In order to combat the germs and icky floating around in airports, cars, public bathrooms, etc., keep this little inhaler around to add some boosted immune support!
- Cinnamon + Orange + Fir
- Thyme ct. Linalool + Frankincense + Lemon
Dry Body Brush
Like I mentioned earlier, travelling is very hard on the circulation. I often end up with swollen, unhappy legs because of sitting in the same position too long. A dry body brush can boost circulation, encourage lymphatic flow, cleanse the body, and get those legs looking lean again for whatever adventure lies ahead! Get one HERE.
