Facts: I am a natural health loving, DIY beauty product mastering, essential oil using, cloth diapering (okay I dabble), whole food eating, stay at home mom blogger who has a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science and researches medical journals for fun. I know it’s a weird combo, but it’s me. Maybe it is part of my INFJ personality type—we tend to have many, many layers that contradict at first glance but in reality are intertwined into perfect uniqueness.
When I started this blog, I was met with many responses along the lines of “Oh well, when you stay at home you need something to do” or “I’m sure it will help you feel like you are part of the world again” or “You probably just want to feel like you have a purpose.”
Truth: I don’t need this blog to feel any sort of self-worth. I don’t need it to feel like I have a purpose or to keep myself busy. I am not, and never will be, defined by what I accomplish and what other people think of me. I am a mother to the most amazing little person I have ever known and a wife to my hard-working and handsome husband. I will do those things with the utmost humility and contentment.
My identity is in the Lord Jesus Christ and that is enough no matter what the world around me says about my worth and purpose. If nobody wants to read my website and this entire adventure fails, I will be okay. Because, I don’t need it. I already have the dream life; I have my family and my faith.
So, Emily, why are you even blogging, you ask? Well, that’s a great question!
I am writing because the Lord has blessed me with a certain set of skills and intelligence, partnered with passion and a unique situation where I have the means to do it. When God gives you gifts, you should use them within His purpose. I honestly believe that I have been gifted with the ability to write in a way that people appreciate and understand; I am passionate about educated natural living!
My calling for my current life situation is to use these gifts, all the while living out the most amazing dream of staying home full time with my daughter. I have all the confidence in the world that this is where I am supposed to be. And yet, most of my day is still spent chasing around a tiny person, dancing around, cleaning up messes, reading books, and trying to figure out what do to with my full, happy heart.
So, to my other intelligent and gifted stay at home mamas:
You are worth being listened to.
You have great ideas.
Your skills, passions, and knowledge matter.
Do you have gifts? Use them! You are worth being heard. You are smart, intelligent women and don’t let anyone make you feel that you cannot use your gifts because you are just a mom and not on someone’s payroll. You have a unique opportunity to possess the freedom to share your passions in whatever way you choose to do so, because you are your own boss. The ability to change the world is right in front of you. Be confident in who you are and where you are, and live the heck out of your life. And yes, sometimes that means getting covered in mashed carrots and dancing around the kitchen.
But sometimes it means writing, encouraging, serving, teaching others, or showing hospitality. If you love to host then host dinner with every bit of poise and pretty serving trays you can muster. You never know how a home cooked meal could change someone’s life. If you are an encourager, spend time purposefully encouraging others. If you are passionate about health and wellness, then share your tips and tricks with others. Sometimes all a person needs to kick start their health journey is someone to do it along side them. If you are gifted at bringing people together, then be the person that plans events. I know for a fact that introverts need people like you to get us out of the house. And, if you are a nerdy lab geek who loves hippie things that are backed by research, then by all means, write blog posts about it! You might just find someone else is interested in the same ideas as you.

Do your children fit into this? Absolutely! We mamas are raising the next generation and that, my friends, is a high calling. Do it and be proud. Teach your babies that they have their own individual gifts and that they matter, period. This is a special time, so embrace it, cherish it, flourish. You will never have these days back again. It is time for us mamas to see ourselves as the rockstars that we are.
Just because we stay at home does not make us any less impactful to the world around us. The way we do it just looks different. Every mother, stay at home or not, should be confident that she is important and her actions have great meaning, even in those moments that no one sees–when it takes all the strength you have to stay awake for just one more nursing session or clean up the third diaper blowout of the day. These moments build character, character builds gifts, and gifts impact the world.
You are a boss.
